Tirana International Airport Nene Tereza (TIA), city centers in Tirana, Durres, Saranda, Vlora, Shkodra, Berat, and coastal towns.
Tirana International Airport Rinas is 17 km northwest of central Tirana via the SH60 road - typically 25 minutes drive without traffic.
Summer months offer the best road conditions across Albania. Mountain passes and coastal routes are fully accessible; fuel stations frequent.
Main corridors SH1, SH2, SH4, SH8, and A1 motorway have asphalt. Secondary roads to Theth, Valbona, or mountain villages often gravel.
Most Albanian fuel stations accept cash only in lek. Card payment rare outside Tirana. Fill up at modern stations on main roads before remote areas.
Tirana and Durres city centers have metered street parking. Saranda and coastal towns offer free parking outside peak season. Hotel parking often available.
Enter your pickup point - Tirana airport TIA, city center, or coastal town - and rental dates. Our system queries offers from local Albanian rental companies operating at that location.
See vehicles grouped by class: economy hatchbacks, sedans, SUVs with all-wheel drive, vans for families. Each offer shows the local rental company name and booking conditions including deposit requirement.
Pay the advance amount by bank card to confirm your booking. Cash is not accepted for the advance. You receive a voucher with final terms, rental company contact, and pickup instructions.
Present the voucher, your driving licence valid for 1+ years, passport, and bank card at the rental counter. The local company concludes the contract and hands over the keys.
We are not a direct rental provider. We compare offers from local Albanian rental companies so you see multiple options at each location and choose the best fit.
Book at Tirana International Airport Nene Tereza (IATA TIA), in Tirana city, Durres port, Saranda near the Greek border, Vlora, Shkodra gateway to the Alps, Berat, Himara, and more coastal points.
All bookings require card payment for the advance online. Cash is not accepted for the advance. At pickup you settle any remaining amount and a refundable security block per the voucher terms.
A subset of vehicles from certain local companies is offered with no-deposit booking condition - no refundable block on your card at pickup. This is not insurance coverage but a contractual term.
Local rental companies know which vehicles handle the gravel road to Theth National Park or the switchbacks over Llogara Pass. They advise on seasonal road closures and fuel station planning.
carrentalinalbania.com has been connecting travelers with local Albanian rental companies since 2023. We serve customers in 9 languages and process bookings year-round.

Albania's capital and largest city with 20+ rental offices. Central base for exploring the country via SH1 north to Shkodra or SH2 south to Vlora and Saranda.
Tirana rental offers →Nene Tereza Airport at Rinas, 17 km northwest of Tirana center. Most travelers pick up here and drive via SH60 to the capital or directly onto the A1 motorway south.
Airport rental →Popular coastal town opposite Corfu island, 8 km from the Greek border at Kakavia. Gateway to Butrint UNESCO site and the Ksamil beaches. Pickups in town center.
Saranda rentals →Albania's largest port city 33 km west of Tirana via the A1 motorway. Ferry connections to Italy. Many travelers arriving by sea pick up a car in Durres to tour the country.
Durres car hire →Port city at the entrance to the Albanian Riviera. Starting point for the scenic coastal drive to Himara and Saranda via the Llogara Pass on SH8.
Vlora offers →Gateway city to the Albanian Alps. From Shkodra you drive east to Lake Koman ferry or north on gravel roads to Theth and Valbona national parks - SUV recommended.
Shkodra car rental →The City of a Thousand Windows, 120 km south of Tirana via SH4. Ottoman-era architecture on hillsides. Central Albania base for touring Gjirokaster and southern regions.
Berat rentals →Beach town on the Albanian Riviera between Vlora and Saranda. Surrounded by the Ceraunian Mountains. Popular June-September; some rental offices close off-season.
Himara pickups →Fiat Punto, VW Polo, Opel Corsa, Hyundai i20. Ideal for city driving in Tirana and Durres or coastal tours on paved SH8. Low fuel consumption; widely available at all locations.
Economy offers →Dacia Duster, Hyundai Creta, Nissan Qashqai. Higher ground clearance for unpaved roads. Models with all-wheel drive handle the gravel route to Theth National Park from Shkodra.
SUV rentals →Mercedes Vito, VW Transporter, Fiat Scudo. Family groups or tour parties traveling Tirana-Saranda with luggage. Available at airport TIA and major city offices.
Van hire →VW Golf, Ford Focus, Skoda Octavia. More boot space than economy hatchbacks; comfortable for 2-3 passengers on longer drives like Tirana to Gjirokaster via the SH4 corridor.
Sedan options →A subset of vehicles from select local Albanian rental companies is offered with a no-deposit booking condition. This means no refundable security block is placed on your card at pickup. The no-deposit option is a contractual term set by the rental company, not an insurance product.
For all bookings on carrentalinalbania.com, advance payment must be made by bank card online. Cash is not accepted for the advance. At the rental counter you pay any remaining rental amount (also typically by card) and sign the contract with the local company. If the vehicle is not flagged as no-deposit, the rental company will place a refundable block on your card as security - the exact amount and conditions are stated in your voucher.
For more details on no-deposit rental in Tirana or payment methods, see our dedicated pages.
To pick up your rental car in Albania, you must present the following at the counter:
Minimum age for rental is typically 21 years, with some vehicle classes restricted to drivers 23+ or 25+ years. A young driver surcharge may apply under age 25 - this is stated in the voucher terms.
Rented a Dacia Duster for 8 days in July to drive from Tirana to Theth and Valbona. The all-wheel drive handled the gravel roads perfectly. Booking was straightforward, paid online by card, and the voucher had all the pickup details. The local company at TIA airport was professional and the car was clean. No issues during the rental. Returned it with a full tank as agreed. Great experience.
Used carrentalinalbania.com to compare offers for a week in Saranda. Found a good deal on a VW Polo with no deposit required. The car was perfect for the coastal drive to Ksamil and down to the Greek border. Advance payment by card online was easy. At pickup in Saranda town center the rental guy explained everything clearly. Roads along the Riviera are in decent shape so the compact car was fine. Highly recommend this site for Albania.
Booked a 9-seat van for our family trip from Tirana to Berat and Gjirokaster. The comparison tool showed several local companies and we picked one with free cancellation. Paid the advance online, received the voucher immediately. Pickup at Tirana city was smooth - they checked our licences and passports, took a card imprint for the deposit, and we were off. The van had plenty of space for luggage and the kids. Main roads SH4 and SH8 were fine. Returned the van in Tirana without issues. Very happy with the service.
Rented a Hyundai Accent for 5 days to explore Shkodra and drive to Lake Koman. The booking process on carrentalinalbania.com was clear and fast. I chose a car with a small deposit and paid the advance online by card as required. The local rental office in Shkodra was a bit hard to find (not at the airport) but once there the staff were helpful. The car was older than expected but mechanically sound. Roads to Koman were rough in places - next time I would take an SUV. Overall good value for money.
Yes, a subset of vehicles from select local rental companies is offered with a no-deposit booking condition. This means no refundable security block on your card at pickup. The option is marked clearly in search results. However, you still pay the rental advance online by card when booking. The no-deposit term is contractual between you and the rental company, not an insurance product.
You need a driving licence valid for at least 1 year, a passport or national ID (EU citizens), and a bank card in the main driver's name. For non-EU licence holders an International Driving Permit IDP is recommended. You also present the booking voucher with the confirmation code. The rental company checks documents and concludes the contract at the counter.
All bookings require advance payment by bank card online. Cash is not accepted for the advance. At the pickup counter you may pay any remaining rental amount by card (or cash if the company accepts it). The voucher specifies the payment breakdown. The refundable security block (if applicable) is placed on a card, never paid in cash.
An SUV with all-wheel drive is strongly recommended. The road from Shkodra to Theth is unpaved gravel for about 30 km with steep sections and switchbacks. A Dacia Duster or similar SUV handles the surface comfortably. Economy cars and standard sedans are not suitable - ground clearance is too low and traction insufficient. Local rental companies advise SUV for any mountain national park access.
Yes, the main corridor from Tirana south via Berat and Gjirokaster to Saranda on SH4 and SH8 is paved asphalt and suitable for compact sedans and economy cars. The road has some curves and climbs over passes but surface quality is acceptable for standard vehicles. Traffic is moderate outside July-August. Allow 5-6 hours for the 280 km drive with rest stops.
Fuel stations are present in Vlora before you start the coastal drive. After Vlora there is a station near Orikum and another before Llogara Pass. Between Llogara and Himara (about 40 km) stations are sparse. Fill up in Vlora or at the Llogara area. In Himara town center there are small stations. Most accept cash in lek only - card payment is rare. Carry local currency for fuel.
Post-Brexit, UK licences are treated as non-EU. Albania officially requires an IDP for non-EU licences according to the 1949 Geneva Convention. In practice some rental companies at TIA airport accept UK licences without IDP, but to avoid disputes it is strongly recommended to carry an IDP. You obtain it from the UK Post Office before travel. EU licence holders do not need IDP in Albania.
The advance payment is the amount you pay by card online when confirming your booking - it covers part or all of the rental fee. This is non-refundable if you cancel outside the allowed window. The deposit (security block) at the counter is a refundable hold on your card as security against damage or fines. It is released after you return the car undamaged. If you book a no-deposit car, there is no security block but you still pay the advance online.
Albanian traffic law follows standard European rules. You drive on the right-hand side. Speed limits are 50 km/h in urban areas, 80 km/h on rural roads outside towns, and 90 km/h on the A1 motorway. Seatbelts are mandatory for all occupants. Mobile phone use while driving is prohibited except with a hands-free system. The legal blood alcohol limit is 0.1 per mille - essentially zero tolerance; roadside checks are common especially on SH8 during summer.
Dipped headlights must be used during daytime outside built-up areas from November to March. In practice many drivers use them year-round. Motorcyclists and cyclists must wear helmets. Children under 12 years must sit in appropriate child seats in the rear. Overtaking is permitted only on the left and where road markings allow. Always carry your driving licence, vehicle registration document, insurance certificate, and the rental contract.
Road surface quality varies widely. The A1 motorway from Durres south is dual carriageway with tolls. Main national roads SH1 (Tirana-Shkodra), SH2 (Tirana-Elbasan-Pogradec), SH4 (Tirana-Berat-Gjirokaster), and SH8 (coastal Vlora-Saranda) are paved but can have potholes, narrow sections, and sharp curves. Secondary roads to mountain villages such as the Theth access road or the route to Valbona are unpaved gravel and require an SUV with high ground clearance and all-wheel drive. Snow can close high passes from November to April - check local advice before attempting mountain crossings in winter.
Urban parking in Tirana, Durres, and Saranda is metered in the center - pay attendants on the street or at kiosks. Parking zones are marked with blue lines; payment usually required Monday to Saturday during business hours. Outside city centers parking is free and informal. Coastal towns have free lots near beaches except in peak July-August when spaces fill early. Hotel parking is often available; confirm with your accommodation.
For a deeper look at Albanian driving culture and practical tips, see our blog post on navigating Albanian roads as a foreign driver.
Rental demand in Albania peaks from June to September when the coast and national parks are most accessible. July and August see the highest traffic on the Albanian Riviera SH8 and around Saranda. Prices for popular car classes (SUVs, economy cars) are higher in summer. Booking 2-3 weeks in advance is recommended for July-August pickups at TIA airport or Saranda.
May and September offer a good balance - roads are dry, mountain passes open, coastal temperatures pleasant, and rental supply exceeds demand so you find more no-deposit options and competitive offers. October is still viable for southern coastal touring but some rental offices in small towns like Himara close after mid-September.
November to March is the low season. Demand for rental cars drops sharply. Many vehicles are available at the lowest annual rates. However, road conditions deteriorate: snow closes high passes including the Theth road and Llogara in severe winters. Urban driving in Tirana and Durres continues year-round without issues. If you plan a winter trip focused on cities and UNESCO sites like Berat and Gjirokaster, rental is feasible and economical - just avoid mountain routes and carry snow chains if venturing inland.
Easter and Albanian public holidays (Independence Day 28 November, National Day 29 November) can create short demand spikes. For detailed monthly advice, read our guide on the best months to rent a car in Albania.
Tirana is the natural hub for multi-day touring itineraries. From the capital you can reach every corner of Albania within half a day's drive. A compact sedan or economy car suffices for paved routes; choose an SUV if you include mountain national parks.
Northern Alps loop: Drive north from Tirana on SH1 to Shkodra (100 km, 2 hours). Explore Rozafa Castle and Lake Shkodra. Continue east on a gravel road to Theth National Park (additional 30 km, 1.5 hours with SUV). Overnight in Theth guesthouses. Return via the same route or take the challenging track to Valbona (4x4 only, or hike the pass and arrange pickup). Total 3-4 days. A Dacia Duster with all-wheel drive is the minimum for Theth; local rental companies at TIA offer these specifically for Alps trips.
Southern UNESCO triangle: From Tirana take the A1 motorway to Fier, then SH4 inland to Berat (120 km, 2.5 hours). Spend a day in Berat's Ottoman quarter. Continue south on SH4 to Gjirokaster (150 km from Berat, 3 hours). Explore the castle and stone architecture. Descend via SH4 to the coast at Saranda (60 km, 1 hour). Return north on the coastal SH8 via Himara, Llogara Pass, and Vlora to Durres (220 km, 5 hours with stops). Total 5-7 days. Any vehicle class works; the entire route is paved.
Coastal Riviera tour: Tirana to Vlora via A1 and SH8 (150 km, 2.5 hours). From Vlora drive the scenic coastal road over Llogara Pass to Himara (60 km, 1.5 hours with viewpoint stops). Continue to Saranda via Dhermi and Qeparo (another 80 km, 2 hours). Day trip from Saranda to Butrint archaeological site (20 km south) and Ksamil beaches. Return north or cross into Greece at Kakavia (8 km). Total 4-5 days. A sedan handles this route comfortably; SUV gives more comfort on the pass curves.
Albania has a growing network of fuel stations concentrated on main corridors and in cities. Tirana and Durres have numerous stations accepting cards and offering modern facilities. On the A1 motorway and SH1/SH2/SH4/SH8 corridors you find stations every 30-50 km in populated areas. Fuel quality at branded modern stations (Kastrati, Esso, Shell equivalents) is reliable; avoid very small roadside pumps in remote areas where fuel age and quality are uncertain.
Most Albanian fuel stations accept cash payment in lek only. Card payment (Visa/Mastercard) is available at large urban stations in Tirana, Durres, and along the motorway, but cannot be relied upon. Always carry sufficient Albanian lek in notes for fuel. ATMs are available in every town above 5000 population; withdraw cash before heading into mountain areas. Fuel prices in Albania are higher than in neighboring North Macedonia or Greece but lower than in Italy; expect approximately 200 lek per liter for petrol (as of 2026 context).
Plan fuel stops on long drives. The Tirana-Shkodra SH1 has frequent stations. Tirana-Saranda via SH4 has stations in Berat, Gjirokaster, and near Saranda. The coastal SH8 Vlora-Saranda has sparse coverage between towns - fill up in Vlora before Llogara, and again in Himara. Mountain roads to Theth or Valbona have NO fuel stations - fill up in Shkodra and carry a spare canister if driving deep into the Alps.

My concern is that on the term and conditions of all of these bookings, it states this ' The minimum driving experience is 2 years. The rental company manager has the right to refuse to provide a car for rent at any time if the age and experience of the driver do not meet these requirements.' PLease can you confirm if that I will definitely not be refused the booking because I have only 1 years driving experience?
This is very interesting, You're a very skilled blogger. I have joined your feed and look forward to seeking more of your great post. Also, I have shared your web site in my social networks!
James, many thanks for you 😎
